When Does Waiting On
Social Security Pay Off?

Every year you delay filing, your monthly Social Security check grows — but you also give up checks you could have been cashing. This calculator compares any two filing ages between 62 and 70 and shows your break-even age: the age at which the larger, later benefit catches up in total dollars received.

Break-even math is one useful input, not the whole decision. Health, spousal and survivor benefits, taxes, and your other income sources all matter.

Breakeven Analysis

Every whole-age pairing at a glance: each cell is the breakeven age for filing at the row age versus waiting until the column age — for example, the top-right cell is the breakeven of filing at 62 vs. 70. Click any cell to load that comparison into the calculator and chart above.

Breakeven ages use your birth date, FRA benefit, and COLA entries above, searched out to age 110 regardless of the projection horizon. Later filing always overtakes earlier filing eventually if you live long enough — the question these cells answer is when.

How The Math Works

The calculator applies the Social Security Administration's published benefit formulas to the FRA benefit you enter:

  • Full retirement age follows the SSA schedule: 66 for those born 1943–1954, rising two months per birth year from 1955 to 1959, and 67 for anyone born in 1960 or later.
  • Filing before FRA reduces your benefit by 5/9 of 1% for each of the first 36 months of early filing, plus 5/12 of 1% for each month beyond 36. (Filing at 62 with an FRA of 67 means a 30% reduction.)
  • Filing after FRA earns delayed retirement credits of 2/3 of 1% per month (8% per year) through age 70. Credits earned during the calendar year you file are not payable until the following January — the calculator models that timing, including the January step-up, except at age 70, when all credits are payable at once.
  • COLA is applied to your benefit annually beginning the January after the year you turn 62, at the average rate you choose. Your SSA statement does not include future COLAs, so figures here will exceed your statement in future years; set COLA to 0% to compare in today's dollars.
  • Break-even age is the first month in which the later filing's cumulative benefits equal or exceed the earlier filing's.

Simplifications to be aware of: results reflect a single worker's retirement benefit only (no spousal, survivor, or disability interplay), assume no earnings test, ignore taxation of benefits and any investment return on benefits taken early, and attribute each payment to its month of entitlement.
